THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE
Action of Second Continental Congress, July 4, 1776
The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen United States of America
WHEN in the Course of human Events,
it becomes necessary for one People to dissolve the Political Bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the Earth, the separate and equal Station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent Respect to the Opinions of Mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the Separation.
WE hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness -- That to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these Ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its Foundation on such Principles, and organizing its Powers in such Form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient Causes; and accordingly all Experience hath shewn, that Mankind are more disposed to suffer, while Evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the Forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long Train of Abuses and Usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object, evinces a Design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their Right, it is their Duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future Security. Such has been the patient Sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the Necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The History of the present King of Great- Britain is a History of repeated Injuries and Usurpations, all having in direct Object the Establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid World.
HE has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public Good.
HE has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing Importance, unless suspended in their Operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.
HE has refused to pass other Laws for the Accommodation of large Districts of People, unless those People would relinquish the Right of Representation in the Legislature, a Right inestimable to them, and formidable to Tyrants only.
HE has called together Legislative Bodies at Places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the Depository of their public Records, for the sole Purpose of fatiguing them into Compliance with his Measures.
HE has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly Firmness his Invasions on the Rights of the People.
HE has refused for a long Time, after such Dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative Powers, incapable of the Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the Dangers of Invasion from without, and the Convulsions within.
HE has endeavoured to prevent the Population of these States; for that Purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their Migrations hither, and raising the Conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.
HE has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary Powers.
HE has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the Tenure of their Offices, and the Amount and Payment of their Salaries.
HE has erected a Multitude of new Offices, and sent hither Swarms of Officers to harrass our People, and eat out their Substance.
HE has kept among us, in Times of Peace, Standing Armies, without the consent of our Legislatures.
HE has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil Power.
HE has combined with others to subject us to a Jurisdiction foreign to our Constitution, and unacknowledged by our Laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:
FOR quartering large Bodies of Armed Troops among us;
FOR protecting them, by a mock Trial, from Punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:
FOR cutting off our Trade with all Parts of the World:
FOR imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:
FOR depriving us, in many Cases, of the Benefits of Trial by Jury:
FOR transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended Offences:
FOR abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an arbitrary Government, and enlarging its Boundaries, so as to render it at once an Example and fit Instrument for introducing the same absolute Rules into these Colonies:
FOR taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:
FOR suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with Power to legislate for us in all Cases whatsoever.
HE has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.
HE has plundered our Seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our Towns, and destroyed the Lives of our People.
HE is, at this Time, transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to complete the Works of Death, Desolation, and Tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty and Perfidy, scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous Ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized Nation.
HE has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the Executioners of their Friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.
HE has excited domestic Insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the Inhabitants of our Frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known Rule of Warfare, is an undistinguished Destruction, of all Ages, Sexes and Conditions.
IN every stage of these Oppressions we have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble Terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated Injury. A Prince, whose Character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the Ruler of a free People.
NOR have we been wanting in Attentions to our British Brethren. We have warned them from Time to Time of Attempts by their Legislature to extend an unwarrantable Jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the Circumstances of our Emigration and Settlement here. We have appealed to their native Justice and Magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the Ties of our common Kindred to disavow these Usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our Connections and Correspondence. They too have been deaf to the Voice of Justice and of Consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the Necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of Mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace, Friends.
WE, therefore, the Representatives of the UNITED STATED OF AMERICA, in GENERAL CONGRESS, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the World for the Rectitude of our Intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly Publish and Declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be, FREE AND INDEPENDENT STATES; that they are absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political Connection between them and the State of Great-Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as FREE AND INDEPENDENT STATES, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which INDEPENDENT STATES may of right do. The sort of nonsense you shout when someone hands the microphone over to you because no one else is standing there and (Good Lord Almighty! Now what!?) the people (at long last after all these precious years!) are turning to notice you! You've got exactly one nano-second to make yourself heard, my friend. Make it good! Lest you be forgotten forever and forevermore!
In other words, my friends here in the darkness of "Life in Sherwood," say it again in your own words: Tell me what it all means!

First off, what exactly is a 'HappyRoman'? That makes no sense to me whatsoever, even as a handle. Also, you didn't cite your source correctly Robin, easybib.com is great for that. I learned it in my failing school system. Also, HR, "List, dry up. you are so responsible for the undermining of Sherwood's Life style, I can not believe"(HR). Clyde is solely responsible for undermining the Sherwoodian lifestyle.... what...? Also, "It is your love of the liberal side, government takes care of all that has turned this country into what is becoming" (HR). Huh? I'm having a hard time understanding broken English, I was taught to read, but damn, it looks like education systems in other parts of the U.S.A are failing their students as well... Take your own advice HR, if you can't write [fluent] and informative comments, stick to your [own] blog. As far as I'm concerned, they don't make much sense to be honest. Perhaps I'm mentally impaired Robin, methinks and explanation (spelled it right, BOOYAH!) is in order, care to provide one?
ReplyDeleteClyde! You'll be ecstatic to know that I had a great 4th o' Julllyyy -even though I didn't celebrate in "The Wood"- but I did see people making merry (like in times of old!) and enjoying themselves in our fair city as I wandered my way home!

Still waiting... waiting.... waiting for some sort of response from these folks at "Life in Sherwood" in regards to their vision for the future of Sherwood Oregon USA. A declaration cheered for by the last dozen or so freedom loving people still left alive in America during the closing phase of 2010 A.D. would be nice. A manifesto of some sort would do the trick. A doctrine even. A platform. A cause. An agenda. A rallying point of any kind for the entire community to gather around. That would to it. A definite purpose. In short: The explanation for why the creators of this weblog, "Life in Sherwood" do not simply go ahead and slash their throats every time they gaze, utterly appalled and dismayed, at the sight of their sagging, wrinkled and colorless faces in the mirror every Monday morning.
ReplyDeleteI think that maybe all of you should step back for a moment and think that maybe Robin was just wishing all a happy 4th of July and that there was no other motive than that? The Declaration of Independence is one of our countries most sacred documents. It was written in a time when a group stood up and said enough was enough and maybe it is time for Sherwood to stand up and say the same thing. But to be honest I don't think anyone has the guts to do that so Oh well!! I truly believe that all the owner was trying to say was Happy 4th with no other motive. Unlike some other folks who find conspiracy where ever they go. Robin you have opened my eyes. I think change will happen in November!! By the way Clyde, I hope your not drunk when you work with the children!

I say you move to Communist China for a while, speak out against their government, and see what happens. Might be educational. Not more than a month ago, I was asked what the mission statement was for the High School. (I answered that we may not have one over there that I was aware of for the last ten years anyway.) The founding Fathers also created a mission statement, known as the Declaration of Independence. From this document, they were on a mission to seek this goal. That is what we should be doing in Sherwood. Making a mission statement of our feelings and then sticking to it. We want equality. We want a calm, lavish environment.

Thank you for checking in Lilly. Any poor pioneer woman from the 1850's who has been through everything you've endured out there on the Oregon Trail deserves to be listened to. Right now as you can see, our hero Robin Hood is struggling to remain in control of the oft-obscene and profane dialog that breaks out here at "Life in Sherwood." Your amazing organizational and instructional skills, Lilly, would be very helpful at this point.

One of the big issues for the founding fathers was no taxation without representation. A novel concept but has been forgotten in the rush to erode and repeal all of our other rights. Maybe a mission statement for the City is a wonderful idea! maybe then we can get a straight answer. Ta Ta

Because Anon, this blog annoys me. Clyde, I'm confused by your comment, you don't need to know who I am! I support you because I think Robin is ignorant, and can't see how beautiful our fair city is.
ReplyDeletePraetorian, I have never said that this city is not beautiful. You misunderstand what is being said. I am simply trying to get the word out on the dark side of the POLITICS of this city. Ask your mom and dad if they are tired of paying all these fees for projects that line the pockets of the leaders of this city? Look at the water bill, when the fees exceed the charges for water usage that is called a graft. Worse yet, this extra revenue is being diverted to pet projects the City Manager wants and not for the good of the city. Don't you think a Skate Park for the kids, repair of the downtown roads, equipment for the teachers/schools and replacing old and out dated Police cars with better more recent models to be more important? Or should we waste money on a building project in a recession that will probably cost more than anticipated and take 10 years to get a return on the investment due to the present economy. You decide.. Ta Ta

Thankfully, I don't skate. I've never heard of my mother, or father complaining. One of my parents lives in Portland, and it certainly is a better city than Sherwood, most likely due to the fact that people like you don't complain and moan about how horrible the place they live in is.
ReplyDeleteWell Praetorian, You should probably not comment on things you know nothing about. And since you get a free ride on your parents right now you would have no clue about the state of affairs here in Sherwood. As for your comment earlier about your school being challenging and so on, funny how the Sherwood high School and the Sherwood Middle school are both on the FEDERAL troubled list. Do you know that Oregon rates 35th in the country in High School performance? DO you also know that Oregon has the second highest unemployment rates? How about the fact that Oregon is #4 in property foreclosures? An even better one #3 in teen pregnancy and drug use? These are stats that should alarm you. This is partly due to the fact that our City and State squanders money like drunken sailors on payday. I am trying to wake some people up to the fact that our children are being shorted on a proper education. Look at over the last few years how many programs have been cut for our schools, that our school enrollment has increased by 35% and yet we have only hired enough teachers to cover about 15%. now my favorite, Sherwood claims to have 17 students per teacher. Sounds good right? Well not so fast as they have included Librarians and aides to make that number better. The true number is around 25-27 students per REAL teacher. That is not acceptable. I would suggest that you do some research. I am trying to improve your school. Ta Ta
